FETC Thoughts – Day 1

After a long day of “conferencing,” here are my thoughts after Day 1 of FETC:

- Jeff Corwin seems like a pretty cool guy. Sure, we all know him from his many TV appearances and television shows, after hearing him deliver the keynote address, I really like the guy. Although he did not speak too much of technology, he did have some rather enjoyable anecdotes. He spoke about how he became a naturalist…when he was 6, he found a garter snake in his grandfather’s backyard. He followed the life of this snake for 2 years until, when he was 8, a neighbor lopped off the head of the snake thinking Jeff was in trouble. It was this moment, he explained, that he became a conservationist. There were over 6,000 people in the hall for the keynote address and I think most everyone came away happy with what they saw. He spoke mainly about how educators play an integral role in enlightening today’s kids with respect to the environment. Thankfully, he did not get all political on us like Bill Nye the Science Guy did last year.

- There seems to be less exhibitors set up in the exhibit hall than in years past. There is alot of empty space at one end of the exhibit hall. I feel bad for those exhibitors who show up with nothing but a little poster to hang up in their space and maybe a table or two to write down information. They are overwhelmingly overshadowed by the likes of Discovery Education, Smart Technologies and Prometheus. I also found it slightly interesting that Apple is a Gold Sponsor of the conference, while there are no signs of Microsoft anywhere.

I have a few instuctional sessions scheduled for tomorrow. Hopefully, I’ll have some useful information to post here tomorrow evening.

Are you here at the conference? Let me know in the comments what you’re up to.

I agree about the vendors. Poor folks with just a poster. I wouldn’t think it’s worth their time to show up. Yeah, that’s true. Where’s the PC representation? Does Dell have a space in the Hall? I missed Bill Nye last year (as this is my first year here) and I really liked the passion with which J. Corwin talked about extinction.

Hey! Nice template your using for your blog.

What plugin is that btw??
