LG.Philips LCD unrolls 14-inch color e-paper display
At this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas set to roll in a couple of days, LG.Philips is set to unveil the latest in electronic paper. Infoworld has the latest info on this marvel. You can read the article here.
This REALLY excites me as an educator. Imagine a classroom where textbooks no longer exist. Imagine an environment where the entire contents of a textbook, along with images, video, and sound, are contained on a single sheet of e-paper. That’s exciting stuff…
Thanks to Wikipedia, I came across a site for a company from the Netherlands, named edupaper.nl, who have already created e-paper that is currently being used in a pilot program at Bonnefanten College (Google English translation here) in Maastricht in Dutch country. Most of the site is in Dutch, but here is an excerpt from the description in the English section of the site: “On a flat device, named “iLiad” with a display the size of half an A4 (or folded letter size) page, all school books for one or more school years will be digitally stored. Through a new technique with “electronic ink”, the device is as easy to read as paper, without any distracting reflections, and the text is – even in full daylight – very well readable. In contrast to a regular laptop, the device stays cool, weights less than 400 grams, and the battery runs out only after 15 hours. All these features facilitate the use of such devices in classrooms, as these devices will not disturb the education process as laptops tend to do.” You can read all about it here. I guess this would be similar to Amazon’s Kindle but in a smaller format designed for educational purposes.
